RMT Goals for myself

My goals in my RMT career

December 05th / 2022

I have a lot of things I want to do for my massage career and I wanted to write them all down. So what's a better place than my blog, to share with all of you.

1) Teach something massage related

2) Organise an RMT socialising event

3) Sponsor a kids sports / arts team, yearly

4)  Full time only at my home practice

5) Take part in some kind of RMT event once a year

1) Teach something massage related - Explained: I would like to teach something to do with massage. I love teaching. When I was more dedicated to art I was teaching adults and children art. It was a ton of fun and it taught myself things as well. I would love to be able to share in the education and knowledge of future RMT's. I know a lot of people jumped from graduating massage school right into teaching. I personally didn't feel like I had enough real world experience though to be teaching yet. I was and still am fresh and new. A greenhorn. In a year or two I would like to get my toes wet though and give a try at being a clinic supervisor and or tutoring. See if I even like it and then go from there.

2) Organise an RMT socialising event - Explained: When I first started massaging I was so excited to get into the field and meet all the RMT's and get things going. But I very quickly realised that unless I was booking massages with other RMT's, I was never going to meet them. There isn't anything in the area ( for me, Toronto East Side ) to meet up. And I also work in a clinic and get the privileged of seeing other RMT's, but even then sometimes I still don't see them unless out times line up. As much as you see clients on a daily, massage can be very lonely peer wise. Luckily we have online groups like Facebook and Instagram. But if the pandemic taught us something, being in person has it's own special values. I would really like to put together an event for RMT's in the east end ( or maybe just Toronto in general ) to all get together and socialise and network. I think it would be healthy for us and healthy for the profession.

3) Sponsor a kids sports / arts team, yearly - Explained: When I was younger, I loved art. I lived, ate, and slept art every single day of my life. But getting supplies was very difficult. Sure I would do what I could with a pencil and a surface I could write on, but it was still different if you wanted to do art in any other form. And art wasn't just about something for me to do, it was also my place to be comfortable and safe. My way of expressing myself and mentally heal. Sports are the same. I want kids to be able to do these things and not have money be whats holding them back.

4)  Full time only at my home practice - Explained: Now don't get me wrong. It is nice working at a clinic. The clinic owner is absolutely lovely and the other practitioners are so wonderful. It's great being around some of my peers. But I LOVE being my own boss in my own space. I don't have to answer anyone. I am in control of everything. I can make sure everything is going properly and take care of it all. It's the absolute dream. I have worked for or under other people my whole life and now that I have my home practice, I cannot express how amazing it is. Like a big free breath of fresh air. It's liberating. And for me personally, I find my motivation and passion is even stronger knowing that everything I do is on my shoulders. It's very empowering. Something I have never felt before.

5) Take part in some kind of RMT event once a year - Explained: There is always something going on. And I want to be more active in the massage world. I want to get out there and meet more people. See what's going on. Take part in more events. So I have set the bar low by making the goal to be once a year. At least. I know I want to always be going to the Canadian Massage Conference. But I know there is more out there and I want to see what I can do.

So those are some goals I have had for a while. As life goes on, sure I might change them up a bit. Might add some new ones as I discover new things. But this is a good list for now and I'm really excited for the future.

I am in love with massage. I really enjoy this profession. But I guess from listening to so many RMT's online talking about their experiences, as they have gotten older a lot of them have lost their joy or spark for this path. I have been there before. I worked in a different career where I did not have that spark. The desire to continue. I didn't have a five year plan because I wanted nothing to do with it. I don't want that with massage so I feel like having some goals will always give me something to also work towards. Something to look forward to. That's my hope anyways.

Let's see how it goes.
